SkillsUSA Team heads to Kansas City, MO for National Competition

June 18-26, 2011:   Students from the Dental, Cosmetology, Network Systems Administration programs and a leadership team of 7 students from the programs of Network Systems, Drafting, and Welding will be traveling to Kansas City, MO to attend the 47th Annual SkillsUSA National Championships, a showcase of Career and Technical Education Students.  These students will compete against student's from all 50 states as well as Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.  This is a multi-million dollar event that is housed in the convention center that occupies the equivalent of 16 football fields.  The conference hosts more than 5,600 contestants, 1,500 judges and holds 96 contests.

March 25 & 26, 2011 - SkillsUSA State Championships.   42 students from the Center of Applied Technology South competed in the State SkillsUSA Championships this past weekend.  These student were eligible to complete by winning in local and regional competitions.  Students competed in various technical and leadership contests.  CAT-South students were awarded 12 gold medals, 1 silver medal and 8 bronze medals.                                                                        

March 2, 2011 - Anne Arundel Community College Visit.  Anne Arundel Community College offers a variety of Certificate programs for non-degree seeking students who want to build skills toward a career.  Programs include the fields of business, medical assistance, child care, the service trades, hospitality, technology, the environment, fitness and esthetics, transportation and more.  On April 1, SRHS will host representatives from the AACC Work Force Development / Certificate Programs office who will present more information about the options open for fall enrollment at AACC.  There will be 4 sessions, each focusing on a general area of interest.  Specifics are listed when you visit the College Visits page of FamilyConnection at southriverhigh.org.  Register on-line or stop by the Guidance Office during lunch to sign up.Want to learn more?  Visit the Workforce Solutions webpage at  http://aacc.edu/cws.

Febrary 5, 2011 - SkillsUSA Regional Championships Forty-Two Cat-South students participated in the SkillsUSA Regional Championships at Carver Technical High School in Baltimore City on Saturday, February 5, 2011.   These students represented the school as contestants, alternates, and models.  Cat-South students demonstrated their skills in their trade areas.  The following students received medals:

Febuary 11, 2011 - 1st Annual Video Game Night.  Cat-south will be holding a video game night.  There will be free play as well as tournaments play.  This fundraiser will help support the schools SkillsUSA Chapter.  The Event will be held Friday, January 28th 5-9 pm.  Cost of tickets $5.00 and $ 8.00 per person.   For more information see Mr. Lee or Mrs. Dugans and/or click here for flyer.

August 31, 2010 - CAT-South students were awarded $72,000 in scholarships during the 2009-2010 school year.

December 2, 2009 - New Principal named at Cat-South.  Mr. Thomas Milans from Montgomery County Public Schools will arrive on January 4, 2010, to become Cats-South new principal.

November 30, 2009 - Cat South Says Farwell to Mr. Ron Alberico after many years of dedicated service to AACPS and Cat-South.  

October 8 & 12, 2009 - Cat South Students donated blood to the Anne Arundel Medical Center.  Students and Faculty donated 39 pints of blood.  The blood mobile will be back at Cat-south again on December 9 & 15, 2 009.  For more information please contact Mr. Sampson, 410-956-5900.

Regarding the Class of 2009 Post-Secondary Plans:

67 %  Plan to attend a 2 or 4 yr college

18 %  Plan to attend a  trade school

13 %  Plan to work full-time

2 %    Plan to join the military

2.     Eleven CAT-S  Graduating Seniors  totaled $ 57, 100 in scholarship awards
